What do I wear when I want to look cute ice skating?
psychedellicplatypus asked:
I'm going ice skating tonight with a big group of friends, like 25 or 30 people, and my friend is setting me up with his friend. We've talked on facebook a bit, but we have never met face to face. I want to look really cute while still wearing those ugly rental boots. Help?
Also, I am sort of a free spirit dresser and have clothes from a lot of different styles, ie hippie, emo, preppy, whatever. And I do not own Uggs.
I didn't mean to post this in the hockey section! Sorry 'bout that.

Fashionable Shoes Need Not Be Uncomfortable Shoes
Mark J Thompson asked:
Long gone are the days when comfortable shoes meant unfashionable shoes. The trend for comfortable and fashion started a few years back with the appearance of Ugg boots on the feet of the seriously fashion conscious and trendy. You could hardly open a style magazine with out seeing some bright young thing wearing her Ugg Boots everywhere from shopping to movie premiers. Comfortable had just become chic.
Since then there have been a whole host of new styles of fashionable footwear from last years surprise, Croc's (bright colored rubber clogs) to the now ever present Sports Sandals and even environmentally friendly Shoes made from recycled material. However through it all the Ugg boot has remained King, Or should that be queen?
A number of companies are now producing a range of what are being called lifestyle shoes these include Teva and Simple Shoes both of whom are owned by the same company that owns the right to the Ugg trademark, Deckers Outdoor Corp. Teva specialize in sports orientated shoes and are fast becoming the leading supplier of the "Sports Sandal". Additionally they offer a wide range of hiking boots and flip flops for the whole family.
One of the most interesting developments in the Lifestyle shoe market has been by the small Santa Barbara company Simple Shoes. They have created a range of shoes made from recycled material and sustainable natural products. By appealing to the inner hippy in many of us they are rapidly creating a niche for themselves supplying environmentally footwear at a time when the general public are becoming more environmentally conscious. When you buy a pair of simple shoes you could be walking on your own recycled plastic bottles and car tires without ever knowing it. Even the boxes the shoes are delivered in are made from recycled material.
One thing all these types of footwear have in common is that they are functional as well as fashionable. A lot of research and development have gone into them to ensure that the shoes are functional, comfortable and at the same time fashionable. Time and effort has been spent looking at medical problems caused by poorly designed shoes and features have been built into the shoes to alleviate these were possible.
There is no longer any reason why you should have to wear uncomfortable shoes in order to be fashionable. No matter what the season or whatever the weather is you can find a great pair of comfortable shoes designed with you in mind.

The Fashion Of The 1960s
Priyanka Arora asked:
The '60s was the decade of freedom. Everyone, particularly the youth, spoke out their preferences, and had an immediate and powerful effect on the fashion industry. For example, the women of the '60s chose to have a childlike image with short skirts, much like the trend in the 1920s.
Fashion in the '60s emphasized simplicity, youthfulness, and neatness. Synthetic fabrics became widely used during the decade. Hats became pass
Grandma’s Dress-Up Trunk
Roxi Hermsen asked:
Grandma's Dress-up Trunk is a trip down memory lane for many grandmothers and an education in fashion for the grandchildren. Do you remember "ironed hair" and "bee hive" hair dos? What about "mini skirts" and "stirrup pants?"
Grandma Micki pulls out her old trunk, full of fashions she used to wear, for her granddaughters, Olivia, Victoria and Charlotte to play dress-up. The girls laugh and comment on how things used to be. "Wow, Grandma you were "cool" when you went to school!"
The girls find a cheer leader's outfit with pom poms, a kilt with "saddle shoes', and find out that Grandma used to sew her own clothes on a treadle sewing machine. "Wow no plug in" laughed the girls. They learned that Grandma was quite the "fashionista" in her day, wearing "tent dresses", "fish tail skirts", "Robin hood" hats, "hot pants" and "go go boots."
Then came the "hippy stage" when Grandma ironed her hair and wore flair jeans with lots of "love beads." Later Grandma wore a pink wedding dress with "flowers in her hair."
As Grandma became a mother, she opted for comfort in a pink velour "jogging suit". To keep fit, she worked out in "Flash Dance" attire and at work she wore "middy skirts" and tall "Granny boots". Today, Grandma keeps looking her best, especially when she goes ballroom dancing, dressed "to the nines". The girls say "we like your sparkly dress, and we think you are a 10 Grandma!"
Grandma's Dress-up Trunk's bright illustrations will transport you back to yesteryear, when crazy fashions were all the rage. Your grandchildren will be as surprised as Olivia, Victoria and Charlotte were. "You ironed your hair Grandma?"
Both grandmothers and grand children will love this book. Take a "trip" back in time and share with your grandchildren, how fun the fashions of the 60's were.

Cyber Chocolate – Decadent Marketing Trends for Chocolate Lovers
Jan Verhoeff asked:
Are you tired of the lack-luster marketing trends that lack power, function and enthusiasm? I discovered recently a project underway that brings back the sparkle to media marketing ideas like the Jingles of the mid 60's. Those baby boomers can get away with just about anything! Nothing rings truer than a marketing jingle that you can't forget.
You wake up in the middle of the night with that sing-song jingle bumping out a tune behind your eyelids, taking up space in your dreams and lighting up the night with memories. My favorites always turned up in class plays and programs with altered words. Can they do that legally?
"Rinky-Dinky Prawn and Pinky You're a Pie in My Eye,
Blinky-Stinky Small and Dinky You always make me cry,
You're the one I always dream of every night of my life
And when I think of you, I just have to sigh..."
I'm not going to give away the tune, sugar pie. But I'll just bet if you're a child of the sixties you'll wake up tonight singing the tune. The words came about from a sucker rendition of a Bicycle Built For Two play done in my grammar school when I was about eight years old. I remember standing in the back of the singing group in my frilly pink dress with lace petticoats singing and dancing and holding up the card that said "MOM" although it was supposed to be saying "WOW!"
Now, as a Mom, I hear my children singing along with tunes on the commercials and wonder where all the sing-song stuff of my youth disappeared to. The rap tunes aren't nearly so sweet and childish, and I can't imagine my daughter in a frilly pink dress, holding up a sign that said "Mom." (Even if she were still in 3rd grade!)
After a summer of reminiscing about school days, my 30th class reunion planning and event, the fair with all the class reunion folks walking around in beads and fringe (one daring senior even wore her leather hippy boots with no hard sole on HOT pavement), I realized we're missing a prime opportunity, so I decided to start remembering occasionally, all the wonderful things of my youth, even on my blog. But, more importantly, I decided to start writing about the decadence of eras long past, those ones we look back on with longing and reverence.
I want Chocolate Cream Pie and Lemonaide on the Porch again. Remember porch swings? How about a nap on the porch swing, where your little brother really might toss a glass of icy cold water straight from the garden hose on you while you slept. Remember chasing him through the cool green lawn barefoot and feeling the rich brown soil between your toes?
Do you remember the decadent flavor of chocolate from the corner drug store when you savored it with an ice cold cherry cola made with syrup straight from the fountain? Cyber-Delicious!
Would I be remiss if I didn't mention the deliciously decadent and indulgent feeling of Friday night movies with friends and the long stroll to the Ice Cream Parlor afterward? A balmy evening, fire flies flitting from bush to bush and Johnny and me strolling hand in hand along the boulevard, past the town square where Suzie and Billie were necking on the park bench near the corner, Betsy and Phil were taking up space on the grass, sprawled out on their backs watching the stars twinkle across the sky.
Our parents weren't worried about us being kidnapped or whisked away by strangers, they were worried about us going out to the Point. Necking on the square was allowed. The Point was off limits.
Are you ready to remember the good ole days with Up-To-Date Marketing for Internet?
From Hippie Art, To Creative Fashion
Priyanka Arora asked:
Tie-dye is considered a fashion art form just like beading and embroidery. It is a practice that concentrates the tint color in the textiles by tying or folding them to create different shapes. Its origin started out in Asia with antique techniques in dying fabrics. It is highly associated with hippies, surfers and bohemians, but today, it reappears to combine with bracelets and other accessories of ethnic inspiration. Today it's not a trippy starburst rainbow; it has been replaced with irregular arcs and stripes often seen in cocktail dresses and even casual tops to combine with jeans, shorts or mini skirts. Tie Dye is also a popular look for a day out at the beach, whether in a skirt or a sarong, tie dye is often seen around the most famous beaches worldwide.
Nothing said "hippie" better than the psychedelic color explosion and unique designs from the old style of tie-dye; it is one of the most ancient forms of fabric design, by human manipulation. Dye can only penetrate loose fabric; it has to be as close to 100% cotton as possible since it does not stick to polyester. Just lock some sections by adding pins, tying fabric in knots or with rubber bands and this way, the dye cannot reach these parts of the fabric, therefore creating a rainbow of colors and a unique design.
Hippies included a little creativity by adding peace signs and hearts to their visual trippy designs. This technique became a hippie ritual since it was an anti-commercial "do it yourself" characterization of owned fashion. Today, designers are turning to this again, trying to own their designs and making them special so they can stay away from imitators or regular people who try to do it themselves so they can afford some shopping money.
Tie-Dye was reborn in the 80's when a new generation started wearing the shirts their parents wore when they were youngsters at Woodstock, other than shirts these included tie-dye sheets, socks, and bags, among other pieces. Tie-dye was and is still the style of choice for people who need a little psychedelic wardrobe to remember the old days, tie-dye will never die.
Now it's your turn to try some creativity with your wardrobe, look for your favorite shirt or dress, fabric dye, gloves, rubber bands and a bowl. Damp your clothes in water and fold it as if you were making a paper fan, continue doing this in other areas and hold them with a rubber band or a clothespin. Once you have gathered the sections to dye, place it in the bowl, put on your gloves and mix the dye in the bowl. Do the same thing in the other side, stirring your fabric so the dye penetrates well. You can leave it on for 24 hours, and then rinse with warm water and let air dry. Use a pack of cheap T-shirts for your first draft; you will get the hang of it.

Which look for first day of school: Hippie, sexy, or rockerish?
Tila Tapas asked:
What's the best look I should choose?
I feel like it should set the tone for the rest of the year. But, I have a lot of sides to myself.
Mostly I'm trying to decide which of these three looks to do: A hippie indie look (which most likely would consist of some kinda indie shirt, one of my hippie headbands, skinny jeans and mocassins or boots), a sexy look (which would probably be my super lightwash skinny jeans, a dark tank, and tinted lips), or a rocker look (which would be my supertight black skinny jeans, a v-neck shirt, and a vintage necklace.)
That's just me kind of labeling them : P Which sounds like the best idea?

10 Fabulous Fashion Revival Tips – Simplicity of Recycling Old Clothes Back Into Fashion
Kacy Carr asked:
In the fashion world of reality have you never noticed how latest trendy fashion designs what clothe boutique shop mannequins - duplicate creations designed decades ago. If your keen eye espied this, then does this not tell you something? Yes that's right, the clothes mum and granny wore in their hey-day could have you after a few minor alterations be the envy of all your friends. A rummage in the closet of the grey haired or blue rinse relative can save you time and money.
Revival of fashion rejuvenates from flower power hippie bell bottoms into flares. The bolero jacket turns box coat, and back on the scene with vengeance the pointed shoe once referred to as the "winkle picker," oh and not forgetting the square toed "chisel". I ask who is responsible for such unappealing names. Mind you back in the days of the Beatles the mention of winkle picker was so desirable it was like music to your ears. In reality chic trendy fashion items are not changing with the times - only the name.
Being fashionable is not about designer labels but the actual design of the outfit itself. The style layout is fashion and not the designer. Think about it, Versace and Gucci have been around for years so nothing fresh or new here, only what they create. The huge demand for fake designer labels is saving the fashion conscious a lot of money. Why pay through the nose for something you can not see or the person you wish to impress. Designer tags are sewn on the inside of most garments. Is there a reason for this? Could it be the shame of charging extortionate prices?
Save pennies today and salvage moms clothing donation for the local jumble sale. Bargain buys come in a multitude of choice from local charity shops and car boot sales. Some folk embarrass easily over wearing another`s cast offs (second hand) and this is understandable. If you can swallow your pride then a cycle wash with fabric softener will have the garment smelling fresh and looking like new leaving you with spare coppers in your pocket. Remember not all items for sale in second hand shops, are second hand.
Why not consider designing your own clothes and create a new image for yourself. Set your own trend/style. Fashion is determined by your way of thinking. If you think something is nice you wear it and vice versa. In saying that we have those regardless of how hideous they look in an outfit continues to strut the walk looking like a freak.
If you follow particular fashion behaviours then make sure they compliment "you" and your shape. If you choose to ignore this advice then be warned
Take heed of the fashion reminder "What goes around comes around" Remember moms' clothes were once chic and fashionable so why not again. Fashion is about attitude and if positive is in there somewhere, better still for recreating. If the golden oldies attire is not for you then try spice up other garments regardless of which person it belongs too.
1. Neck ties or any kind of neck adornment like scarves, chokers, boot laces and tastefully twisted rope can make a huge impact on how a plain dress/blouse looks. Dickie bows and cravats are fabulous finishing accessories.
2. Bring out the calling in colours - let them shout. Clash colours if you want to get noticed. Stripy shorts and polka dot tights (green red yellow) whatever your preference in colour will turn heads.
3. Use colourful ribbon to make a flash impression. Get it out of your head (excuse the pun) that ribbons are solely for the hair.
4. Tights and socks with funky inexpensive bits and bobs sewn on create an affective finish.
5. Liven up old belts with sequins, bows, studs, chains, rhinestone, pearls or beads
Anyone can revive their wardrobe by recycling their clothing.
1. A long skirt can be shortened. Short skirts can have layers added e.g. ra ra style, tassels or fringe.
2. Remove dress or blouse sleeves to create a sleeveless one. If a dress has pockets embroider with fancy stitching or sew on flower motifs.
3. Not familiar with a needle and cotton that's okay, you can purchase fusing and permanent glue products for many tasks.
4. Feathers are fabulous and fancy and glue easy.
5. Leave your mark on a pair of plain slacks by running a satin strip down the leg, waist or hem. Cheap inexpensive trims can add oomph, sparkle and elegance and can be obtained from craft and fabric stores.
If you can knit then take advantage of this trait and knit a shawl or woollies i.e. sweater or scarf and decorate with a brooch or other type decorative pin.
It is simple to accessorize with a brooch. The brooch can be pinned to one side of your neckline towards a sleeve or in the middle of your neckline highlighting the bust. Gather the material and attach the brooch to your bra strap. This creates a unique neckline and offers a wide range of possibilities for clothing items. Fashion magazines are a fine source for ideas. The finest craftsmen in the world who work on gems and Jewelry are Indian`s, and look how they present themselves at the time of a tribal war dance.
Good fashion sense tells us not to go over our budget and that we don't want to wear the same outfit over and over, hence more reason to be able to create. It is best to find a look that best suits your personality. Not all trendy fashion designs are created for each individual, individually, so therefore you must feel comfortable before you can feel stylish.
Chic fashion designs come and go! Don't hold back on buying classic wardrobe accessories. As long as you have imagination they will never go out of style.

The 60′s Are Back in Clothing Styles
Thomas Cohen asked:
It seemed that as the 60s faded out and the 70s came along to replace an ere there was a few characters that failed to notice that the decade had changed. They were referred to as "old hippies" and they hung on tight to what they felt looked good and many of them are still dressed that way today.
It was definitely not an "off the shelf" look, because just about every customised feature that was worn during the Hippie or "flower child" era had to be created by hand. So much of what they did during that time was done on a pair of old faded "Levi" jeans. This is because, what many people don't realize is that during that time "Levi Strous" was, for the most part, the only show in town.
Sure, there were a few other brands of jeans such as Wranglers that a true hippie would not be caught dead in, due to the fact that Wranglers were the favorite garb of "red necks", who happened to be the arch enemy of the hippie. Then there were other "off brands" of jeans that were sold in places like K-Mart and J.C. Penny stores that just wouldn't "cut it" in the eyes of the true discriminating hippie.
So, it was Levis and not just any Levis, because they had to be faded somewhat. When the straight legged look went to bell bottoms in the middle of the hippie era, rather then throw out perfectly good faded Levis, many hippies adapted. What they would do is cut out a big "V" in the bottom of the leg and then stitch in some fabric of a contrasting color and design. This effectively turned what was once straight legged Levis into bell bottoms, only with a personalized unique look.

Mix in neutrals from the brown family along with some red, orange, navy, cobalt or plum for a splash of color. Form-fitting cuts make a big comeback. Look for more fitted and form-fitting cuts because once September hits, it'll be time to put away those billowing summer tops. Scarves, scarves, scarves! Fall season staples for any wardrobe, summer scarves will bulk up slightly and dominate the fall season leading into winter. Sweaters with a twist. Sweater dresses -- with and without a turtleneck -- will make a big splash once the chilly fall air rolls around. Back to baskets. Basket weaving patterns will appear in everything from dresses to boots. Traditional accessories are in. Native American-inspired and turquoise jewelry will dominate the accessories arena. Flirty and fun. For skirts and dresses, tiers and ruffles add a flirty flavor to any fall outfit.
